What is 3D scanning?

3D scanning is a technology that scans actual objects (three-dimensional objects) and generates 3D model data.

It is used for purposes such as scanning old machine parts and converting them into data when ``we have the actual parts, but the drawings and the manufacturer at the time don't exist.''
This is a method of so-called reverse engineering.

We provide 3D scanning services using a combination of a handheld 3D scanner and specialized software for editing scanning data.

3D scanning service

The equipment we use is the 3D scanner "Artec Spider."
"Artec Spider" is a small, portable 3D scanner that can be used for scanning outdoors or on business trips.

Since a 3D model is generated from the acquired data through image processing, there is no need to attach markers to the object as with conventional 3D scanners.
In addition, by combining it with the reverse engineering software ``Design X'', it is possible to generate highly accurate 3D models of industrial products, etc.
With our 3D scanning service, we can submit scanning data at the following levels, depending on your needs and budget.

LevelContentDataNote
1Raw data
(Point cloud)
STLData accuracy improves depending on the degree of surface division.
2Surface data
Solid data
STL, IGES, STEPThe basic data is surface data, but it can also be converted into solid data if the surface is closed.
3Shape replacement data
(Reverse engineering)
STL, IGES, STEPWhen replacing the shape, we determine standard values, tolerances, etc. through consultation with the customer.

3D scan sample

Zucchini

3D scanning sample zucchini

This is a scan sample of a vegetable (zucchini) converted into data in a 3D scan test.
Even the texture, such as the smooth body part and the intricate bottom part, can be converted into data.

Face

3D scanning sample face

This is a scan sample of a person's face that was converted into data during the test.
As explained later, hair cannot be scanned, but skin can be scanned with high accuracy.
The strength of 3D scanning is that it can convert shapes with intricate aspects like this into data.

Notes on 3D scanning

"Artec Spider" has an optical measuring principle.
Please note that this will impose the following restrictions.

・Measurement accuracy will decrease due to reflection from shiny surfaces such as metal.
For this reason, measurements are performed by spraying a flaw detection spray on the measurement surface.

  • It may not be possible to measure minute irregularities such as hair.
In this case, it is possible to measure it as a whole by hardening it with paint etc.
  • It may not be possible to handle large objects (up to 400x400)
In principle, it is possible to measure objects larger than 1m, but the alignment accuracy will decrease.
Also, it may not be possible to handle large data that exceeds the processing capacity of the computer.

・It may not be possible to create a 3D model for areas that cannot be measured optically, such as undercut shapes.

3D scanning costs vary widely depending on the customer's level of request, so we will provide an estimate on a case-by-case basis.
